What's Been Accomplished

Since 2006, the St. Bartholomew's congregation has raised more than $18 million, primarily from its own members, friends, and the St. Bartholomew's Preservation Foundation, an organization the Conservancy has since replaced. Those funds were largely committed to crucial but not readily visible restoration projects: Flat roof and roof drainage repairs, realignment of a bowed parapet wall, waterproofing the surface of the Great Terrace, replacing crumbling sidewalks. Funds were also urgently needed and used for Community House repairs and Great Dome restoration, but it was not in the parish's financial capacity to address other exterior masonry issues, including restoration of decorative sculptures and brickwork.

In 2015 it was agreed that the St. Bartholomew's Conservancy would take the lead in raising funds to restore and preserve building exteriors and gardens. As a first step, and through an extensive application process with the National Park Service, the Conservancy nominated the St. Bartholomew's Site for successful designation as a National Historic Landmark. Shortly thereafter, the Conservancy raised the $1.8 million still needed to commence restoration of the Great Dome, a long-planned project that required the Conservancy's financial support for the $6 million cost. Since then, the Conservancy has initiated and successfully funded illuminating the restored Dome and has contributed to restoring the Church Building's North Facade.

Our focus now is on the West (Park Avenue) Facade, which includes the celebrated Triple Portal, a stone and bronze masterpiece, designed in 1903 by Stanford White and executed by renowned sculptors Andrew O'Connor, Philip Martiny, and Herbert Adams.
